  2. MICROSOFT« WINDOWS 3.0

  5. This document contains important information about the HP
  6. DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft« Windows
  7. 3.0 that supplements the on-line Help. These topics are

  24. APPLICATION NOTES

  27. At the time the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for
  28. Microsoft« Windows 3.0 was released, the following software
  29. application limitations existed:
  30.  
  31.      COMPUTER SUPPORT ARTS & LETTERS v3.01, MICROGRAFX 
  32.      CHARISMA v2.0, MICROGRAFX DESIGNER v3.01: Text 
  33.      rotation is not supported.
  34.      
  35.      COREL DRAW v1.2: "Fit to Page" is not supported.
  36.      
  37.      MICROSOFT« EXCEL v2.1c/d: When printing fonts larger 
  38.      than 40 point, manually enlarge the cell size before
  39.      printing.
  40.      
  41.      MICROSOFT« PROJECT v1.0: It is recommended that you have
  42.      more than 1 Mb RAM (640 Kb with 384 Kb extended) to
  43.      print in Windows Standard mode. 
  44.      
  45.      MICROSOFT« PROJECT v1.0: Top or bottom borders may be
  46.      truncated, resulting in some lines not being printed.
  47.      
  48.      MICROSOFT« WINDOWS WRITE v3.0: Large point size 
  49.      characters may not print.
  50.      
  51.      MICROSOFT« WORD FOR WINDOWS v1.0 and v1.1: At large
  52.      point sizes, the double underline will appear as a
  53.      solid line.
  54.      
  55.      MICROSOFT« WORD FOR WINDOWS v1.0 and v1.1: This
  56.      application does not recognize newly installed printer
  57.      fonts until you choose Printer Setup from the File menu
  58.      and click OK.
  59.      
  60.      MICROSOFT« WORD FOR WINDOWS v1.0 and v1.1: When printing
  61.      in landscape orientation, italic characters may not
  62.      print completely.
  63.      
  64.      WINDOWS FILE MANAGER v3.0: When Print File is chosen, 
  65.      the last line on the page may not be printed.
  66.      
  67.      The following printing problems occur at 150 and 75
  68.      dots per inch print resolution:
  69.           
  70.           MICROSOFT« EXCEL v2.1c/d: text does not print.
  71.           
  72.           MICROSOFT« POWERPOINT v2.0: text is compressed when
  73.           printed.
  74.           
  75.           OMNIS 5 v1.01: graphics do not print.
  76.           
  77.           SAMNA AMI PROFESSIONAL v1.2: graphics box outlines 
  78.           do not print.
  79.           
  80.           ZENOGRAPHICS PIXIE v2.0: text is compressed when
  81.           printed.

  83.      If you are using a 640 Kb RAM computer system under 
  84.      Windows Real mode, some software applications (e.g., 
  85.      MICROGRAFX CHARISMA v2.0, COREL DRAW v1.2, MICROGRAFX 
  86.      DESIGNER v3.01, MICROSOFT« EXCEL v2.1c/d, MICROSOFT« WORD 
  87.      FOR WINDOWS v1.1) may be unable to print.

  91. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
  92. ====================

  94. A 80286 processor or greater is required to use the HP
  95. DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft« Windows
  96. 3.0.

  98. Memory Requirements
  99.  
  100. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  101. Windows 3.0 was designed to work with supported Windows 3.0
  102. system configurations. Although the driver will work on a
  103. minimum memory configuration (640 Kb RAM), 1 Mb (640 Kb
  104. conventional memory with 384 Kb extended memory) or more
  105. memory is recommended.

  107. Disk Requirements
  108.  
  109. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  110. Windows 3.0 requires approximately 1 Mb of free disk space
  111. for installation of the driver and the three printer fonts
  112. that came with it (Courier, CG Times, and Univers).
  113.  
  114. Printer Support
  115.  
  116. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  117. Windows 3.0 supports the HP DeskJet 500 and HP DeskJet PLUS
  118. printers. This printer driver is also compatible with the HP
  119. DeskJet printer, but the print speed will be slower. For all
  120. three HP DeskJet printers, the print quality will be the
  121. same.

  123. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  124. Windows 3.0 does not support internal printer fonts, font
  125. cartridges, or soft fonts. To access these fonts, use the HP
  126. DeskJet Family printer driver. See "Printing with the HP
  127. DeskJet Family Printer Driver" later in this document for
  128. more information.

  132. PERFORMANCE
  133. ===========

  135. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  136. Windows 3.0 was designed to give you the best possible
  137. performance on your printer, but its output speed can be
  138. affected by the mode under which you run Windows:
  139.  
  140.      Under Real mode, the following errors are likely to 
  141.      occur because of memory limitations: out of memory 
  142.      errors when printing, noticeably slow printing, or 
  143.      large point sizes not printing.
  144.  
  145.      Under Standard and Enhanced modes, the following errors 
  146.      may occur depending on the number of applications you 
  147.      have open at one time and the amount of memory your 
  148.      computer system has: out of memory errors when 
  149.      printing, noticeably slow printing, or large point 
  150.      sizes not printing.
  151.  
  152. Recommendations
  153.  
  154. Most techniques for improving your printer's performance
  155. require freeing memory for the printer driver to use. The
  156. printer driver works like an application, the more memory
  157. that is available for the printer driver to use, the better
  158. the printer's performance. Try the suggestions below to
  159. improve printer performance if your printer is slow or you
  160. are having difficulty printing:

  162.      Add extended memory to your computer system to increase
  163.      printer performance.
  164.  
  165.      Close those applications that are not currently active 
  166.      and try printing again.

  170. USING ADDITIONAL SCALABLE TYPEFACES
  171. ===================================

  173. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  174. Windows 3.0 supports all scalable typefaces in the HP
  175. MasterType Library format. You do not need HP Type Director
  176. 2.0 to use these scalable typefaces because the Intellifont
  177. type scaling technology has been built directly into the
  178. printer driver. You will, however, need to "reinstall" these
  179. typefaces using the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable driver if you
  180. already have installed them on your system. Information for
  181. installing HP MasterType Library format typefaces is
  182. available by choosing Troubleshooting from the Help menu in
  183. the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable on . . . dialog box.

  185. The Intellifont type scaling technology scales and
  186. rasterizes the HP MasterType Library format typefaces on
  187. your computer. The data is then sent to the printer as
  188. graphics data. This process differs from HP Type Director
  189. 2.0, which downloads fonts to RAM cartridges in the printer
  190. and then accesses them like soft fonts. RAM cartridges are
  191. not used by the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for
  192. Microsoft« Windows 3.0 and will not improve performance.

  196. ACCESSING THE WINDOWS SYMBOL SET
  197. ================================

  199. The Windows Symbol set was included with the printer fonts
  200. that came with the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver
  201. for Microsoft« Windows 3.0. A file named SYMBOL.WRI, included
  202. on the disk(s) that came with the driver, contains the ANSI
  203. code equivalency table for the Windows Symbol set. This 
  204. file may be read by using the Windows 3.0 Write accessory.

  206. To use the Windows Symbol set, you will need to install 
  207. the CG Times printer font and the Symbol screen font 
  208. (SYMBOLE.FON that came with Windows). To access the Symbol 
  209. character set, follow the instructions in the SYMBOL.WRI 
  210. file.

  215. PRINTING WITH THE HP DESKJET FAMILY PRINTER DRIVER

  218. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  219. Windows 3.0 is a graphics data-based driver, and as such,
  220. converts all information sent to the printer to graphics
  221. data.

  223. If you are printing documents that contain mostly text
  224. and would like the ability to improve in your printer's
  225. performance, you may wish to print those files with the HP
  226. DeskJet Family printer driver. This driver came with your
  227. Microsoft« Windows 3.0 application package. To use it, select
  228. the HP DeskJet Family printer driver from the List of
  229. Printers in the Printers dialog box and set it up for use
  230. following the instructions in your Microsoft« Windows User's
  231. Guide.

  233. Both drivers may be installed at the same time and you may
  234. alternate between the two by Activating the appropriate
  235. driver in the Printers dialog box from the Control Panel.
